Pennsylvania Nursing Home Resident Facing Drug Charges Waives Right to Hearing

Drug charges filed against a resident of the Orwigsburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center advanced to Schuylkill County Court Tuesday after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Joseph E. Hunt, 70, was scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Andrew Serina, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, but instead chose to waive his right to a hearing. Hunt admitted to selling methamphetamine to another resident at the nursing home, and the drug was found in his wallet, according to police. An Orwigsburg Police officer responded to the facility earlier this month after a staff member found a straw and white, powdery substance inside a baggie under the mattress of another resident. The substance tested positive for methamphetamine, according to police. At first, the resident denied knowing what the substance was or how he obtained it, but eventually told the center administrator that Hunt sold him the drug for $10. Hunt initially denied knowing about the drugs, but later admitted to selling the methamphetamine, although he said he did not charge the other resident “because he owed me money,” according to the police report.
