California In-Home Supportive Services Worker Sentenced to Nearly Three Decades in Prison

An in-home supportive services (IHSS) worker with a lengthy criminal history pleaded guilty in Butte County Superior Court to abusing her elderly client for months and will receive nearly three decades in state prison. Desiree Serena Herrera, 47, of Oroville, pleaded guilty to counts of elder abuse and felony assault stemming from her ongoing abuse of a man in his 70s who was under her care. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the case began in September 2025, when Butte County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Enloe Hospital in response to a report of a patient brought there with multiple serious injuries, as a result of suspected elder abuse. Deputies learned the victim had been living with Herrera, who was his IHSS worker at the time. Deputies observed that the victim was covered in bruises and abrasions, had broken ribs in the process of healing, damage to an eye, and a head injury.
